Amarach Goes to School

Enjoy this great story from Allison karnes, wraps project leader

This is a truly beautiful story from WRAPS (washable, reusable, affordable pads).

Allison Karnes, who leads that project, shared an update about a new worker in a newlsetter sent out to the Karnes' friends, followers and donors. This worker is lovingly nicknamed "Amarach 3" since there are several woman working for WRAPS with the same name!

Be prepared to shed a few tears when you read about a recent moment Allison and Amarach shared.

…..

Late one afternoon a group of factory workers stopped by our house to collect their school fees. This is one aspect of WRAPS that we are especially proud of. Many of our women begin working with us with only a smattering of primary school education. Today, two of them are in Grade 11. As the staff filed in, each collected either their own night school fees or school fees for their children.

Amarach 3, one of our new workers, came in and collected her daughter’s Grade 10 tuition. She watched as another new worker, Beza, showed me her 8th grade certificate. She was eager to go back to school and begin 9th grade. Amarach went outside and waited on the veranda for her new friends to finish getting their fees.

Just as I gave out the final school payment Amarach came back in and sat down. She looked up at me and quietly asked, “Do you think I could go to school?”

“Of course, you can,” I responded. Through quivering lips, she answered, “I’ve never been to school,” and broke down and sobbed. The women all gathered around her comforting this sweet woman. And so, her tiny world pops open and her new educational journey begins.
